Nowadays children consume foods with many calories, causing major
damage to their bodies. From our young children to teenagers, American kids are
getting too overweight, by eating too much and also unhealthily. Obesity in the
United States is one of the main problems we have today. Children are not being
taken care of, and people are just not taking it as serious as they should. The
first lady Michelle Obama is one of the few people to address this situation.
She thinks this is a big problem that should be fixed, so she use her own power
to start her campaign called “Let’s Move,” which is to raise a healthier
generation for kids. I think this is a big step on making a change, and agree on
what she doing. Because I too think kids should be healthier than they are
today.
“More than one in five children between the ages of 6 and 17 are
now considered overweight” (DonorsChoose.org), that’s one to many children. The
less knowledge people have about obesity, the less of a concern it is to them.
Now a days parents just let their children eat anything without knowing the long
term effect it has on them, so they’re clueless when a problem come about out of
now where. In my opinion knowing about the obesity problem is the best way to
help prevent it. In recent debates on obesity, some people don’t believe eating
fast foods and not be active is the cause of being obese. But other people such
as Michelle Obama and her “Let’s Move” campaign think otherwise. They believe
eating healthy and being involved physically can prevent obesity. To me youth obesity is not being brought to attention as much as it should be. This is why
we have so many overweight children in our society.
Michelle Obama ‘Let’s Move” foundation, I think is a start on
people taking action toward childhood obesity. “If we don’t solve, one third of
children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their
lives”, said the First Lady Michelle Obama. I agree with her, because diabetes
is one of the main causes of death we have today in America.
Children growing up obese will get diabetes. So if we have a chance to prevent one way of getting it, why not? With having children eat healthier and
exercising more to prevent obesity. Instead of eating unhealthy meals, such as McDonalds, or any other fast foods. Children should eat more nutritious and
healthier meals. Being active plays a big role in children lives, being involved
in sports or any physical activity could help prevent obesity. “60 minutes a
day, 5 days a week for children”, Mrs. Obama says children should engage in
physical activities. Little things we can do to help prevent
obesity.
Today’s society is all corrupted; its main focus only is the
money. Fast food restaurants like McDonalds do whatever they can to attract
children. From their Ronald McDonald monument, to selling toys with kids meals
to have children wanting more. All the calories little kids take in when the
consume McDonalds, damages their bodies. This causing them to be obese, and this
doesn’t concern them. Other food places don’t have the calories posted on the
menu, so parents buy their kids eat whatever they please not knowing what’s
going in them. I think fast food like McDonalds should have a more healthier
meal plan for kids. Also all restaurants should have the calories posted where
there menu is bold enough so people can see it, to their concerns. I think by
these changes childhood obesity would decrease and we wouldn’t have such a huge
problem.
In my opinion childhood obesity is a big concern, people aren’t
as much aware about it as they should be. Can it be fixed in a day or a couple
of months, maybe even a couple of years? No. But I think we can start to address
the situation more, and take action. By having calories bolded in menus, among
other simple solution changes can eventually occur. Little things like keeping
children active, having them eat more nutritious and healthier meals. And less
junk, can start to make a change in stopping childhood obesity. I’m ready for a
change, so is Michelle Obama. So I think we all should start to take action, and
take this matter more seriously. Help stop Childhood Obesity.
